Looking Out
(2017)
Subject: Eastern Phoebe in flour mill Dimensions (inches): 16.5 x 8.75 Medium: Oil on Russian birch Description: The setting for Looking Out is Bellamy's Mill, a working 19th Century flour mill at Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg Ontario. Upon entering, one experiences a sudden shift in awareness from the bright outside world to one enclosed with varied lighting from full to deep shadow. This became the primary focus in developing the composition for the painting. The viewer is firmly rooted inside. The only connection to the outside is through the rectangle of the window, and this view is limited to open air and inaccessible. The phoebe, in contrast, is not only positioned to view the outside world but gifted with the ability to fly.
