Subject: Red-breasted Nuthatch Dimensions (inches): 5.5 x 3.5 Medium: Oil on Russian Birch Description: A large spruce tree growing just outside the living room window provides a wonderful opportunity to observe the comings and goings of birds approaching our winter feeders. The diminutive red-breasted nuthatch is a favourite of mine, both for its attitude and its jaunty appearance. Seeing such a tiny figure, clinging head down on the side of this enormous expanse of sculpted bark, one is inclined to think this single tree must feel like an entire vertical world to this bird. This thought prompted the concept of showing only the bird against tree bark that extends out to every border of the painting.
