Algonquin Moose Study II
(2013)
Subject: Bull and Cow Moose Dimensions (inches): 16 x 20 Medium: Oil on Russian Birch Description: Years ago I completed a study based on observing a pair of moose in Algonquin Park. Over the ensuing years I have been fortunate enough to relive that observation in many different circumstances. I found myself relating the most recent of these experiences to that initial study and began entertaining the idea of a second study that related the old with the new in some direct fashion. In Algonquin Moose Study II, the cow moose is pretty much identical to its original version. The bull in the lower portion of the image however, has been flipped horizontally and with a full extension of the powerful body that is missing in study I. Completely new is the portrait of the bull showing the full width of the antlers.
By the time the work was completed, I felt I had reasonably addressed the rather esoteric reasons for beginning the painting in the first place. More importantly, the piece itself seems capable of standing on its own, and the degree to which it can do this is more a matter of design, drawing, tonality, lighting, etc.
