Subject: Winter night landscape Dimensions (inches): 5.5 x 8.25 Medium: Oil on Russian Birch Description: Bright winter nights have always been a phenomenon of great interest to me, a magical transformation of familiar surroundings that brings to mind a host of memories reaching all the way back to childhood. Painting the experience of being like a wandering shadow under moon and starlight is something that has great appeal to me. In 2005 I made my first attempt at this with Heart of Winter, a project that required off an on again attempt to get it right. Since then I have made a number of further studies, with Algonquin Winter being the most recent. I am beginning to feel that my paintings are slowly closing the gap between visual representation and the feelings generated by the experience.
