INFLUX - Sparrows in the Louvre
(2013)
Subject: House Sparrows & Poseidon Sculpture
Dimensions (inches): 10.25 x 17.25
Medium: Oil on Russian Birch
Description: A few years ago, while visiting the Louvre in Paris, I happened to see a house sparrow fly across the classical sculpture garden. I was struck by the comparison of this humble little bird sharing the same space as these priceless treasures in one of the world's great art museums. This sense of things has remained with me, resurfacing now and then in the form of a possible image that would unite these two, quite disparate, elements. Eventually I felt this desired link could be accomplished by creating a visual narrative in which there is a sense of interaction between the sparrows and the statues. I didn't want this image to appear as if it was merely recording a literal observation, and this led to the partly divided, yet intersecting design that adds to the dynamics of the scene.
INFLUX was selected for the cover of Art Tour International Magazine's Top 60 Masters of Contemporary Art catalogue (2013) out of over 5,000 entries. The catalogue was launched during Design Week in Florence, Italy. Michael was also interviewed by ATIM's online presence, Vivid Arts Network, and featured in the July issue of ATIM.
