Subject: American Woodcock Dimensions (inches): 8.25 x 12 Medium: Oil Description: Certain subjects have a way of drawing up pronounced recollections, and this is one of those for me. So many of my sightings of woodcock have to do with late evening situations; visiting an old friend of my father's and waiting while he finished the farm chores for the day, walking home late after spending the day fishing on the river with a couple boyhood chums, or straggling in late after any number of outings to pick wild berries, etc.. Painting this bird in late evening light, became for me a metaphor of those bygone days, and all the bitter-sweet emotions they still have the power to evoke.
