Subject: River Otter Dimensions (inches): 11.5 x 8.5 Medium: Oil on Russian Birch Description: Otters are efficient aquatic hunters, adapted to the water as efficiently as the fish they feed on. They are also curious and playful, often going out of their way to enjoy a favourite mud bank to slide down. This aspect of the otter became the focus of my intent in portraying it. By including two lesser white butterflies as the subject of the animal's attention, rather than something it would pursue to eat, I hoped to convey this curiosity as a quality unto itself.
