Subject: Alexander sharpening axe Dimensions (inches): 8.25 x 5.5 Medium: Oil on Russian Birch Description: The person shown in Nipissing Hardwood is my brother Alexander. He lives on the property settled by my paternal grandparents in the Nipissing district of Ontario. On this land he built his house, utilizing local timber such as the huge maple log he sits upon in this image. He is a wonderful carver and he makes use of wood and stone from his own backyard as the raw material for his creative efforts. In Nipissing Hardwood, I intended to show a vital aspect of his day to day environment and his close relationship with it.
