Subject: Cedar-strip boat Dimensions (inches): 5 x 7.25 Medium: Oil on Russian Birch Description: I repeatedly noticed this old cedar-strip boat resting upon wooden saw-horses whenever I drove a particular route from the studio into town. The out-building, pale and still, with a yawning mouth of darkness formed by a doorway missing its door added a sense of quiet waiting to this forgotten corner of a roadside field. Late one winter a mild spell had diminished the snow a bit, and a thin light illuminated the scene in such a way to finally inspire me to paint. Sometimes the effect of observations need to mature over time in order to resolve themselves as a painting...especially when they depend greatly on highly subtle qualities.
