Outcrop
(2011)
Subject: Eastern Wolf Dimensions (inches): 7.25 x 5.25 Medium: Oil on Prepared Panel Description: The eastern wolf is unique to Algonquin Park. Its closest direct relative is the red wolf of the southern United States, and once formed a continuous population between the two points. Agriculture and development eventually eliminated the animals in the middle segment of their range and the remaining communities developed along separate trajectories. The Algonquin population is genetically affected by coyotes to the south and grey wolves to the north, both of which they interbreed with. This results in a wide range of physical characteristics. In OUTCROP I have chosen to depict an individual largely unaffected by either influence, while still presenting the subject in a way that satisfies my personal artistic considerations.
