Single Furrow
(2006)
Subject: Killdeer Dimensions (inches): 7.25 x 5.75 Medium: Oil Description: The field in front of me was slowly converting from stubble to turned earth, one row at a time. The team drawing the single-furrow plough worked in practiced unison, responding to their master by way of his vocal calls and the long leather lines whose terminal loop hung about his neck. By the time most of the field lay folded in rich brown rows, it had attracted numbers of birds foraging for seeds and exposed insect life. A lone killdeer perched on a nearby clod of earth, drew my attention like some irrisistable force, imbedding an impression in my mind that demanded a counterpart in paint. The compulsion inherent in such moments is a perennial source of surprise to me, always containing some unexpected insight that I fervently hope to communicate in a finished work.
