Subject: Common Egret Dimensions (inches): 6.25 x 5.25 Medium: Oil on Prepared Panel Description: A controlled burn in a Florida conservation area cast a pall of yellow-brown haze, dimming the outlines of tall southern pines in spite of the full clear light of day. Near to my vantage point a lone egret stood, dressed in luminous white plumage that deepened to umber shadow, caught between the contrasting effects of sunlight and the darkening influence of rolling smoke. It was this particular quality that I was more interested in painting than the fire itself, that of influence rather than the explicit.
