Subject: Young Donkey Dimensions (inches): 5 x 7 Medium: Oil on Prepared Panel Description: In 'Stepping Out' I wanted very much to create a sense of immediacy and intimicy in both the animal's presence and its environment. To do this I introduced the darkened doorway as a black shape descending from the top of the panel, framing and isolating the donkey, as well as providing a recessed area from which it could emerge. The log structure and foreground become devices to limit the sense of depth in all but the key area of donkey and doorway, and this was kept in mind throughout the process of describing the various surfaces in paint. As for the donkey itself, I could easily sense the hesitancy with which such animals make their way across a threshold, especially where it drops down as this one does. In my mind I kept hearing that first tentative step sounding on the wooden beam and this thought resulted in that one hoof being placed as it is, something that I feel is one of the main defining aspects of the painting's narrative.
