Ram's Head Pulley
(2008)
Subject: House Sparrows
Dimensions (inches): 6.12 x 4.12
Medium: Oil
Description: While exploring the mediviel city of Troyes, France, I became quite interested in the various pulleys, hoists, and other public contrivances evident in small inner courtyards or narrow gated streets. This pulley, so named because of the decorative 'rams horns' design appealed to my sense of the aesthetic, and coupled with the clear light that revealed its form to such great extent, I found it an irrisistable subject to sketch. The ever present house sparrows, darting in and out of alleys, alighting on lamp-posts, and indeed on the very apparatus I was sketching, made the scene complete. Being quite pleased with my initial efforts the oil painting followed very shortly upon my return home.
