Bush Camp
(2008)
Subject: Chopping Block and Gray Jay Dimensions (inches): 8 x 8 Medium: Oil Description: Gray Jays are notoriously bold and will gather at sites of human activity where they wait for the opportunity of offered food. If such an invitation is not forthcoming, the gray jay has no compunction of stealing it if the chance presents itself. Bush camps, like those of my ranger days in Algonquin, or set up by hunting and fishing guides, trappers are also among the favourite haunts of the gray jay. Invariably such places also always have a good axe and a supply of split wood. The unspoken code of the bush is that one may help oneself to the wood when in need, but the reciprocal etiquette is to restock the pile before you leave. The elements of axe, split wood, and gray jays are so intertwined in my experiences that combining them in a painting was perhaps inevitable.
