Subject: Mourning Doves Dimensions (inches): 12 x 16.25 Medium: Oil Description: I've titled this painting First Born, but it is the mother dove that dominates the scene, and to emphasize this I have deliberately played the light across her beautiful form where it glistens on irridescent neck feathers and sets the soft pinkish breast feathers glowing. The fledgeling dove is pressed up against its mother, in a position that suggests both need of close contact for security and curiosity about the larger world around them. I remember those very perspectives from my own early childhood, and my thoughts often went in that direction as I painted.
