Subject: Hoatzins Dimensions (inches): 20 x 32 Medium: Acrylic Description: Hoatzins are an ancient species of bird that has been around for several million years. They live in the Amazon Rainforest in colonies of from six to as many as thirty individuals and exist on a diet comprised exclusively of plant material. With their Pheasant sized bodies seeming to be in constant motion, they raise and lower wings and tails in cadence with their rasping, wheezing call. Red Eyes and a permanently erect crest give them a sort of crazed appearance. The challenge with this painting was to convey a sense of animation and capture the character of these looney looking critters. By using a lot of tension points in carefully overlapping the birds and the leaves of one of their favorite food plants, Montrachardia, I've created a chaotic feeling throughout the composition. Nothing static here! 1998 Society Of Animal Artists Award Of Excellence
