Plains Spadefoot Toad
(2014)
Subject: Plains Spadefoot Toad Dimensions (inches): 8 x 10 Medium: oil on masonite Description: A very interesting toad, the Plains Spadefoot toad has smooth skin like that of a frog and a vertical pupil, not characteristic of true toads. It is named after its black spade shaped projection (tubercle) on each of their hind feet which helps them to dig into the sandy soils they inhabit. They can most often be found during the night after a heavy spring rain on the Grasslands.
