'Head above Water' Polar Bear
(2016)
Subject: Polar Bear
Dimensions (inches): 14 x 21
Medium: Acrylic
Description: I joke that this painting is a kind of self-portrait, as at times in my life, I can relate to this bear in getting in over my head and then just furiously treading water to stay afloat. However, the bigger issue with this painting and the bigger inspiration, is the condition of the disappearing polar ice caps, forcing polar bears to swim great lengths in order to find land. In 'Head above Water' I tried to convey the struggle and uncertainty of this particular bears plight. Only the viewer can determine whether he makes it to shore or not.
