Snowflakes
(2014)
Subject: Snow Buntings
Dimensions (inches): 24 x 20
Medium: Mixed media on canvasboard.
Description: Salthouse beach in North Norfolk, England, is a prime spot for seeing Snow Buntings in winter. I have spent many hours on the shingle bank there, huddled down as low as possible to get some degree of protection from the icy wind coming in from the North Sea, watching their comings and goings. The arrival of a male bird, dropping in like a small flurry of snow, is always a special moment - one old, but very apt, name for the species is 'Snowflake'. Snow Buntings are classified as 'Least Threatened' on the IUCN Red List, but despite this there is evidence that the species is in significant decline in some areas, for example in North America. The reasons for this are unknown; some researchers have linked an apparent contraction in range to the effects of climate change.
