Scoter
Subject: Diving white-winged scoter Dimensions (inches): 21 x 21 Medium: Watercolour Description: White-winged scoters are sea ducks that eat mostly shellfish that they dig from the beach during dives. I was attracted to its white wings, colourful bill and its general shape under water. I particularly liked the stream of bubbles. This was one of my first paintings in which I explored the use of colours to highlight the shape of the bird. Yellow light reflects off the plumage against the green water to provide contrast to otherwise dull black feathers. This colour contrast tricks the eye - something I learned from Impressionist painters.
