Lone Indian Wolf(Canis Lupus)
(2013)
Subject: A lone Indian wolf in Northern Karnataka Dimensions (inches): 36 x 46 Medium: Oil on canvas Description: The wolves in India prefer grasslands and scrub jungle. In Karnataka, these are mostly the village grazing pastures or rain fed agriculture fields. Due to the fast changing landscape, the Indian wolf is loosing ground. Traditionally, these are landscapes shared by the local grazers, the nomadic shepherds and the wolf....... In the case of the Indian wolf, the nomadic shepherds of north Karnataka and Maharashtra have been showing an exceptional level of tolerance towards them. The shepherds believe that the wolf is their own brother & they have to share the space. Because of new growths of human society, this ancient culture of co-existence of man and animal is on the verge of extinction. A vanishing culture and a vanishing species, though they are technically enemies, are clinging on to each other through a thin thread of superstition for survival.....they are both going to vanish from the south central Indian plains in another 2-3 decades.
