Still Point of the Turning World
(2013)
Subject: Whooping Cranes at nest
Dimensions (inches): 36 x 48 x 1.75
Medium: Acrylic on Gallery Canvas
Description: A painting of Whooping Cranes at the nest. I tried to find that moment where literally and figuratively, things stand absolutely still right before everything changes.
Parenthood changes everything and these two birds are about to embark on that journey. By 1938 the population of adult cranes had plumetted from tens of thousands down to a mere 15. Efforts by many including International Crane Foundation have boosted the number to over 500. For Whooping Cranes to come back from the brink, nothing is more important than making sure those two little eggs survive and mature to have chicks of their own someday. Please consider a donation to the International Crane Foundation to ensure our own children will be able to see the Whooping Cranes dance. You can find out more here: https://www.savingcranes.org
This painting is titled after "Still Point of the Turning World," a poem by TS Eliot
At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless; Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is, But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity, Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards, Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point, There would be no dance, and there is only dance. I can only say, there we have been: but I cannot say where. And I cannot say, how long, for that is to place it in time.
Eliot 1952
