Confluence
(2015)
Subject: Roseate Spoonbill
Dimensions (inches): 11 x 11 x 2
Medium: Oil on Braced Baltic Birch
Description: As it may be guessed from their presence in many of my paintings, I'm a bit of a birder. Florida is known as a bird paradise, so I was thrilled when friends offered their condo for a vacation there. I researched birds before we left, and was particularly interested in the Roseate Spoonbill because of it's unique platypus-like bill. We travelled to nature reserves in search of this elusive beauty, and just before we left Florida I finally spotted one, but had to follow it into someone's backyard just to get a few fleeting photos. On the next trip back to our friends' condo on Isla del Sol we took our bikes, and to my surprise on the first evening biking the island golf course, there on a pond was a Roseate Spoonbill! We returned many evenings and were treated to the delightful sight of this bird landing and taking off from the water, and I got dozens of great reference photos. Later, as I sketched, I tried to create a dynamic composition showing the whimsical confluence of motion between the bird's wings and the splashing water. I normally don't paint in such vibrant pink and magenta, but I loved how striking these colours appeared against an indigo backdrop.
