In this case it is the escort to the female that is warning other challengers away. If they reciprocate with their own trail it ends up in a brawl with the winner getting the right to escort the female. The female in this painting is called Daisy and the male doing the bubble trail is Big Hunk. Both were named by Mark & Debbie Ferrari of The Center For Whale Studies. A percentage of all sales go directly to this organization.
