Marlin can reach speeds in the open ocean of up to 68 miles per hour. 'They are recognized by most people as a sport fish,' Wyland says. 'But for an artist they represent something much more magnificent – they are creatures of phenomenal speed, power, and an almost regal beauty.' Wyland's keen artistic eye reveals a pair of marlin in their hunt for prey, a sight seldom witnessed by man. He further draws our attention to the marlin's crested dorsal fin and distinctive markings. In 2010, Greenpeace added the striped marlin, white marlin, Atlantic blue marlin, black marlin, and Makara to its seafood red list – a category indicating fish that have a very high risk of being sourced from unsustainable fisheries.
