The Face Behind the Eucalypts
Subject: Koala Dimensions (centimeters): 80 x 110 Medium: Oil Description: As with a vast number of Australians, I grew up with koalas living in the trees in our backyard. But this national icon is now in trouble.
The Australian Koala Foundation's research indicates an alarming rate of decline in koala numbers due to urbanization, uncontrolled habitat destruction and disease. Extinctions of local populations have already occurred.
Much like a canary in the coal mine of Australia's natural environment, the koala may have dual significance. Protecting koala habitat could help over 400 other threatened plant and animal species already identified at risk in the same areas. Sadly, most of these species don't receive the publicity that will ensure their survival. Perhaps this iconic species may be the power behind the protection of a wide range of Australian biodiversity.
The face behind the eucalypts is truly the fight for an icon.
