A Tree Needs A Bird - Clark's Nutcracker and Whitebark Pine Tree by Ellen Woodbury
  A Tree Needs A Bird  (2017)
Subject: Clark's Nutcracker and Whitebark Pine Tree
Dimensions (inches): 22 x 17 x 11
Medium: Belgium Black Marble and Sivec Marble on Carrara Marble and Granite
Description: 'A Tree Needs A Bird' shows the Clark's Nutcracker and the Whitebark Pine. These two alpine species have a fascinating symbiotic relationship. The nutcracker pries open the cones of the whitebark pine and caches the seeds in the ground to eat throughout the year. Some of the uneaten pine seeds grow into whitebark pines. This is the only way whitebark pine seeds are dispersed. Nutcrackers are omnivorous and are doing fine. Whitebark pine trees are endangered due to white pine rust fungus and pine bark beetles.
