The birds have been heavily persecuted for their market value and are an excellent game birds so heavily hunted. This has sadly led to decline in their numbers. Male has a harsh call mostly heard in spring when he sits at a prominant site and attracts a mate and this is the time when he is most vulnerable to be captured or shot.
