Industrial Evolution
(2012)
Subject: The industrial revolutions effect on evolution and Charles Darwin's theories Dimensions (inches): 31 x 37 x 1.5 Medium: Collage, coal, acrylic medium, artists footprints and oil paint on canvas. Description: Only a trace of human (homo sapien) activity remains in this post Industrial Evolution environment. In On the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin envisioned a gradual evolutionary change where plants and animals adapted to conditions over time. However, humanities interference with the natural world has deconstructed this evolutionary model. Social complexities have caused a dependency on increasing amounts of fossil fuels and made humanity responsible for their own evolution and that of the whole planet. The coral reefs and Chilean beetles (Chiasognathus grantii) that Darwin studied less than 200 years ago are now considered at risk as peak oil looms on the horizon.
