I encountered this bird at close range in the rainforest of s-e Peru, at Explorer's Inn. It had its eye on a Squirrel Cuckoo that had landed within a few feet from me and froze, apparently to deter the intentions of the falcon. The stratagem worked, as the falcon slipped off in a second. For this painting, I had in mind the quiet presence of the falcon within the thickness of the forest, watching.
