Morning Flight - Lloyd Lake
(2010)
Subject: Canada Geese, Canadian wetlands Dimensions (inches): 20 x 60 Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Description: One early Autumn morning I woke up and took a stroll down to a nearby natural protected wetland area. I put my waders on and went out and quietly nestled myself in amongst the reeds. After observing varieties of waterfowl moving around me, suddenly a thunderous wave of flight was felt as a family of Canada Geese emerged from the reeds and flew towards me. The geese at this time of year are preparing themselves for their long winter migration. When the birds do migrate, they form impressive aerodynamic 'V-formations' and can cover 2400 km in just 24 hours with a favorable wind.
Canada goose populations represent a successful wildlife protection program that revived dwindling numbers in the beginning of the 20th century. Canada Geese make use of natural wetlands as habitat. Unfortunately, Canada's wetlands continue to disappear. As much as 70% of Canada's original wetlands have been lost.
