Memories of encounters with wildlife always seem to stay so fresh in my mind. The Long Eared Owl is one I will never forget. One night as I was driving home along a small country road, a Long Eared Owl glided over the hedge from my right and flew along the centre of the road illuminated by the beam of my headlights. Flying for about 200m he swooped upwards and perched on a branch. I looked up at him and he looked down at me. He sat longer than I could stay!
Long Eared Owls are long eared only in name; their little tuffs of feathers are believed to be used to aid camouflage and perhaps help with communication. They hunt at night, flying low to the ground scanning for any movement. During the day they hide out under the dense cover of trees.
Long Eared Owl: Least concern Interesting fact: During winter, as many as 20 Long Eared Owls can roost together. This is known as a 'parliament of owls.'
