Ancient Memories - San Woman by Judy Scotchford
  Ancient Memories  (2006)
Subject: San Woman
Dimensions (centimeters): 61 x 46
Medium: mixed
Description: Whilst in Namibia, we stayed at Okonjima where we were taken out on the bushman's walk. Our guide explained and demonstrated aspects of the San life and culture. The San or Bushmen are considered survivors of the original indigenous people that inhabited much of southern Africa. They were a hunter/gatherer society with a nomadic lifestyle that once lived in harmony with their environment, but whose people are now struggling to come to terms with the modern world. Wherever we travelled we saw traces of this ancient culture. At Erongo Hills there is a cave whose walls are covered in the most delicate, simple and expressive figure and animal paintings, mostly of hunting scenes.
