Reflecting On A Lost Treasure
(2005)
Subject: Carolina papakeet in the snow Dimensions (inches): 9 x 12 Medium: Oil on Canvas Description: The Carolina Parakeet was the only native parakeet in North America. Its range encompassed the entire Eastern United States. This colorful, tropical-like bird did not migrate during winter months. What a spectacular sight it would have been to encounter one of these birds in the snow. The complete story behind the disappearance of these parrots may never be known but there seems little doubt that man and his effects on the environment were responsible. One contributing factor of their demise was described in the journals of Audubon. The parakeets ate much of the fruit from the orchards of the first settlers. To protect their crops the settlers would shoot large numbers of them. As the birds were being shot in the orchards those still alive would fly down to the stack of their fallen companions and stay with them. This made them easy targets and large numbers of birds were killed at one time. The last known specimen died at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1918.
