Sovereignty In Peril - Mountain Gorillas by Chris McClelland
  Sovereignty In Peril  (2007)
Subject: Mountain Gorillas
Dimensions (centimeters): 82 x 87
Description: In August 1995, Marcel, probably the most famous mountain gorilla since Dian Fossey's Digit, was shot and killed on the fan-slopes where Margie and I and our daughter Miranda first encountered this awesome creature and his family of 24 members in May 1994. In a case of greed, an attempt was made to kidnap for profit a baby male gorilla. Sadly, the protective nature of this endangered species led to the silverback and the infant's mother being shot as well.

In this scene, Marcel who is almost twice the weight of his two females looks intently at one of them who dares to return his threatening gaze with a look of nonchalance. While the other female looks on knowingly, the baby gorilla continues eating gallium vine innocently unaware of any adult misdemeanour.
During the precious time we had with this group, Marcel in a show of authority, charged and clutched my shoulder. His powerful grip was released when my guide grabbed me under the arms and bodily pulled me backwards to release his grip. It was an intimate moment with the wild and an experience to be remembered with affection!
