March Starlings
(1984)
Subject: Starlings
Dimensions (inches): 26 x 38
Medium: acrylic on Masonite
Description: By mid March in our area, the signs of spring become noticeable. Last year's grass begins to peak through the snow in golden beige patches, little red buds begin to appear on the thorn apple trees, and the starlings also begin their spring metamorphosis. The tiny white spots they sport on their feathers all winter disappear and their beaks begin to change color for the coming summer months. These are some of the subtle transitions I tried to record in this painting, while at the same time, developing the type of expansive landscape that allows the viewer the opportunity to walk deep into it.
