Ode to Oscar
(2015)
Subject: Crow Dimensions (inches): 24 x 33 Medium: Acrylic on Masonite Description: In 2014 we spent several days exploring Prince Edward Island in the Canadian Maritimes. One day we happened upon this crow perched on a dead bush with a pine forest backdrop. He didn't seem to be a bit afraid of us and modeled for several pictures. He reminded me of another, even friendlier crow I had known as a boy growing up in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. I had a paper route in Oakland Borough and a family on the northern fringe of my route had captured and tamed a young crow. He would frequently land on my shoulder as I approached their house with the newspaper and each time I asked him his name he would reply "Oscar" in a guttural, parrot like voice. I tried to create a little more atmospheric depth in the painting than was there at the time, and I deliberately eliminated some trees at the base of the closest hill to expose the red earth that was so prevalent all over the island.
