Description: In the spring of 2012 we spent a few days visiting the Chincoteague and Assateague Islands off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. We saw many species of birds that we have also seen near our home in Pennsylvania, but they seemed less skittish here, making them easier to observe and photograph. We got a great picture of this egret flying very low, but I didn't like the background in the photo so I put the painting off for a while. My mind kept picturing a different setting, so I developed what I wanted from elements of the marshlands of Chincoteague Island. I also wanted to develop, for the viewer, the feeling of a hot, hazy, humid summer morning with this 'great white' silently gliding through the marshlands, under the radar.
