Road to Sugar Wood
(2007)
Subject: Fall Scene with Northern Harrier
Dimensions (inches): 21 x 47
Medium: Acrylic on Masonite
Description: One beautiful autumn morning in 2007, I decided to hit the dusty trails in the mountains of northern Pennsylvania near the town we live in. I ended up on a road that led to a property owned by some friends of ours, the Oxley family. I got out of the car to wander around for a while and was totally awestruck by the colorful paneramic view that spread out before me in every direction. While I was breathing in the splendor, a northern harrier (sometimes called a marsh hawk) flew right past me low over the field, then circled back again. I watched her till she left the area, then continued down the road to Oxley's where Alan took me on a walking tour of his property, which he and his wife, Bonnie refer to as Sugar Wood. The view on this road was so expansive that to show a good portion of it would have required a board around 70 inches in length, which my studio was too small to handle. So this painting is just a composite, a slice, of the beauty found along the road to Sugar Wood.
