"Painting the Painted Dogs - Artistic Study of an Endangered Hunter" was the title of my Artists For Conservation Flag Expedition. I spent 6 weeks at the Painted Dog Conservation project near Hwange National Park, traveling with PDC staff searching for elusive African Wild Dogs. I also spent time learning about the educational and community involvement aspects of the project. I continue to donate 25% of proceeds from all Painted Dog artwork to the PDC project. To read my expedition journal, see sketches, photos & video from my trip please click on the AFC butterfly logo on the left of your screen.

For nearly nine years I lived in the southern African countries of Botswana and Zimbabwe. During this time I sketched constantly, gaining a thorough knowledge of the habitats and the wildlife of the region. I continue to return on a regular basis and only paint the African wildlife species I have observed in their natural habitat. Each of my paintings is based on personal experience and is the result of many hours spent camping and game viewing in the parks and wildlife areas of southern Africa.

I believe that most people find a place in the world which draws them back again and again. If you are familiar with Africa you will probably know this feeling well. From an artistic point of view Africa has an amazing range of wildlife, a wonderful quality of light and a sense of space. But there is also an indefinable quality that attracts me, and in an effort to capture this I use loose washes of color and minimal detail in my work. I want my wildlife subjects to be instantly recognisable, even from a silhouette, but I frequently use unusual colors to paint them. I aim to create paintings which will evoke memories of the African bush but still leave plenty of room for imagination.
